OpenAI has revealed that ChatGPT is now being used by 900 million people every week, bringing the AI chatbot very close to the historic milestone of 1 billion weekly active users. The announcement was made on Friday, highlighting the platform’s rapid global adoption.
Along with user growth, OpenAI also reported a major rise in paid memberships. The company now has 50 million paying subscribers, with early 2026 showing exceptional momentum. According to OpenAI, January and February are shaping up to be the strongest months ever for new subscriber sign-ups.
In its official blog update, OpenAI explained that users rely on ChatGPT for a wide range of tasks, including learning new skills, writing content, planning projects, and building products. As usage continues to expand, the platform itself improves—delivering quicker responses, better reliability, enhanced safety systems, and more stable performance.
The latest figures represent a 100 million user increase compared to the 800 million weekly active users reported in October 2025, underscoring the accelerating pace of adoption.
OpenAI shared these growth numbers alongside news of a massive new funding round. The company has raised $110 billion in private funding, making it one of the largest private investments ever recorded. The funding round includes a $50 billion investment from Amazon, as well as $30 billion each from Nvidia and SoftBank. This places OpenAI’s valuation at approximately $730 billion before new investments.
The funding round is still open, and OpenAI expects additional investors to join in the coming months, further strengthening its position in the global AI landscape.
